3 Pests That Often Emerge After A Storm Or Heavy Rains

Posted on

If you live in an area that gets a lot of bad storms and heavy rains, this can cause some pests to emerge from their homes. These pests may then look for another home to live in permanently or temporary. Keep reading to learn of three of these pests so you can keep an eye out for them.

Cockroach

Cockroaches are drawn to wet and humid conditions in homes. If they detect this, you may have droves of cockroaches headed to your home. The American cockroach is a common cockroach to see after rains. They can get a few inches longs and have wings. These cockroaches are dangerous as they breed fast which means you can have an infestation quickly.

Cockroaches are nocturnal so you will not see them during the day. If you wake up at night and switch on a kitchen light, you may see hundreds or even thousands of them scurrying to get out of your way. The best thing to do is hire a pest control company to take care of the cockroach problem for you before it gets out of hand.

Mice and Rats

If it rains enough, it can flood dwellings that mice and rats live in. They will then leave their homes and look for dry areas to live, which often means homes. Once they get inside your home they can multiply. Babies are born and quickly grow, and they have babies. If the mouse and/or rats find the food, water, and shelter they need, they may choose to stay in your home instead of going back to their dwelling after the rain.

You can use mouse traps on your own to get rid of mice and rats. If you continue to see a problem with them, contact a pest control company to take care of this problem for you. They can kill the mice and rats or catch and release them in another area.

Termites

If you have subterranean termites, they live underground. When there are heavy rains, this can wash out their homes and they then find a dry place to live. Unfortunately, this can mean nearby homes. Termites are dangerous as they eat wood and can cause a lot of structural damage to your home.

Contact a pest control company if you think you have termites. They will do an inspection to be sure. If found, they have a variety of ways they can kill the termites. There are also things they can do to prevent a future termite infestation.
